Flint Engine Operations Builds 1-Millionth 1.4-Liter Engine
As employees at General Motors’ Flint Engine Operations prepare to produce the all-new engine that will power the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze and Volt, the plant celebrated a significant milestone late last month in the production of its 1-millionth 1.4-liter engine.
“Attaining 1 million engines produced is always an important milestone,” said Terri Burden, Flint Engine plant manager. “But this is particularly special because it comes as we prepare to launch an engine that will be a key part of GM’s global engine program for many years to come.”

The milestone was reached in a little over four years’ time, with production on the 1.4-liter engine that powers the current-gen Volt, Cruze, and Sonic getting underway in Flint in 2011. The plant, which opened in 2002, is currently undergoing upgrades provided by a $200 million investment from GM.
Flint Engine Operations is one of six engine plants that will be building the new Ecotec small gas engine, resulting in a combined output of 2.5 million engines a year by 2017. Production has already concluded on the 1.4-liter engine, and preparation has begun for production of the new Ecotec engine has begun. Flint Engine Operations will continue to build the 3.6-liter engine found in the Chevy Colorado and Traverse, GMC Canyon and Acadia, and Buick Enclave.
