Ford's 1.0-liter EcoBoost Engine wins fifth IEOTY award

Ford’s 1.0-liter EcoBoost Engine

Ford’s little engine that could (and can!) has scored yet another 2016 International Engine of the Year “Best Engine Under 1.0-Liter” title, making this the fifth straight year that the 1.0-liter EcoBoost has taken home the top honor in its class.

The 1.0-liter EcoBoost was found to be the winner by a panel of 65 journalists spanning 31 countries, defeating 32 engines from competing automakers. The 1.0-liter EcoBoost has been at the forefront of its class while simultaneously serving as the inspiration for other brands to pony up with offerings of its own: in contrast, there were only 13 offerings in the 1.0-liter and under category in 2012, and 2015 marked a significant uptick in 1.0-liter turbocharged engines with direct fuel injection. The 1.0-liter EcoBoost was also named the overall winner of the 2014 International Engine of the Year.

“The 1.0-liter EcoBoost was a game-changer, and despite others following our lead, it remains the undisputed benchmark in its class five years on,” said Joe Bakaj, vice president, Product Development, Ford of Europe. “The spirit of innovation continues to drive us as we look to use the same smart thinking for a new breed of efficient, clean, and powerful down-sized diesel engines.”

Eleven of Ford’s top-selling models in Europe—including Fiesta, EcoSport, Focus, and Mondeo—are offered with the 1.0-liter EcoBoost, and approximately one in three Fords overall and half of all Fiestas sold in the United Kingdom last year were powered by the multi-award-winning engine. The 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine is offered in vehicles across 72 different countries.

“That it’s won the overall award three times and keeps getting the jurors’ votes now highlights just how special Ford’s 1.0-liter EcoBoost is,” said Dean Slavnich, co-chairman of the 18th International Engine of the Year awards and editor-in-chief of Engine Technology International magazine. “It’s a fantastic testament to how down-sizing and greater fuel efficiency needn’t mean sacrifice in other areas like power, refinement and drivability, and can even help enhance these elements.”
