Fortunately for drivers, there is an abundance of available fuel options out there today: hybrid, electric, plug-in, and regular ol’ combustion powertrains can be bought, borrowed, and leased from all walks of automakers.  However, Ford appears poised to corner an energy segment all its own: compressed natural gas.

Ford has plans to offer a compressed natural gas (CNG) version of its 2014 Ford F-150, which is the leading seller in Ford’s F-Series line. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, emissions from CNG vehicles are approximately 6 to 11 percent lower than that of gasoline.  As TreeHugger notes, CNG tech creates the potential to capture and utilized flared gas and biogases and put them to better—and cleaner—use.

According to Ford’s press release, 2014 F-150s with CNG will utilize the 3.7L V6 engine and will be capable of getting more than 750 miles per tank.  Considerably cheaper CNG costs lead to better fuel efficiency and lower costs for drivers in addition to decreased emissions.

“Businesses and fleet customers have been asking Ford to make F-150 available with CNG capability to take advantage of the fuel’s low price and clean emissions,” said Jon Coleman, Ford fleet sustainability and technology manager. “With the money saved using CNG, customers could start to see payback on their investment in as little as 24 to 36 months.”

The news comes on the heels of Ford’s posting of July’s sales figures, which show the F-Series to be going strong with a total of 60,449 sales over the course of July and marks the 24th consecutive month of increased sales for the pickup line.
