To honor the man who so skillfully led the Ford Motor Company back to prominence over the course of a nearly eight-year career, Ford has announced the Alan Mulally Leadership in Engineering Scholarship.

The Alan Mulally Leadership in Engineering Scholarship is a $1 million program that will assist students seeking careers in automotive engineering and help ensure the future of Ford’s innovative leadership for years to come.

“Alan’s engineering background and data-driven decision making paved the way for the extraordinary leadership he provided at Ford,” said Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford in a statement. “We are honoring his legacy by providing scholarships to students who demonstrate the strong engineering ability that is required to develop into the next generation of leaders for our industry.”

The scholarship will be split up into $100,000 scholarships to be awarded to 10 exceptional students on an annual basis for the next 10 years. Half of the funding will come from the Ford Motor Company itself, and the other $500,000 will be provided by the Ford Motor Company Fund.

The Alan Mulally Leadership in Engineering Scholarship serves the twofold purpose of honoring the former CEO, who stepped away from the position at the beginning of the month, and engendering young scholars to build their careers in the automotive industry while helping to keep Ford among the leaders in innovative technology.

Ford Fund will manage the scholarship program as part of its Ford Blue Oval Scholars initiative. In 2013, Ford Fund donated $8.5 million to education programs alone.
