Ford UK Scrappage Plan

If you live in the United Kingdom and have been waiting for the right time to trade in your old clunker for a fresh new Ford, take notice. The automaker this week announced a new car and van scrappage plan that will serve the dual function of improving air quality and putting more butts in the seats of new Fords.

The deal is applicable to any pre-Euro 5 vehicles registered by December 31st, 2009 and will net those who trade in a credit ranging from £2,000 to £7,000 on select new Ford vehicles. Two of the foremost vehicles included in the scrappage deal are the Ford Fiesta and Transit Custom, which are respectively the most popular car and van in Britain.

Ford vehicles powered by EcoBoost or EcoBlue engines are up to the more contemporary Euro 6 emissions standard, which helps cut carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter in the atmosphere. According to the SMMT, cutting down the 19.3 million pre-Euro 5 emission level passenger vehicles still on roads in the UK today could reduce CO2 emissions by up to 15 million tons per year.

“Ford shares society’s concerns over air quality”, said Andy Barratt, Chairman and Managing Director, Ford of Britain. “Removing generations of the most polluting vehicles will have the most immediate positive effect on air quality, and this Ford scrappage scheme aims to do just that.

“We don’t believe incentivizing sales of new cars goes far enough, and we will ensure that all trade-in vehicles are scrapped,” Barratt added. “Acting together, we can take hundreds of thousands of the dirtiest cars off our roads and out of our cities.”

The scrappage program will be available for any new Fords registered from September 1st through December 31st.
