Ford Smart Mobility Game Challenge

Ford appeared at Gamescom this week to announce a competition that will task game developers with solving global mobility issues. The Ford Smart Mobility Game Challenge will result in one lucky winner walking away with a €10,000 grand prize and presenting their game at the Mobile World Congress 2016 in Barcelona, Spain.

“The Smart Mobility Game Challenge is designed to harness the creativity of the gaming community and empower gamers to take a fresh approach to tackling today’s global mobility issues,” said Ken Washington, vice president, Ford Research and Advanced Engineering. “Applying the fun, engaging and rewarding aspects of games to journey planning can allow people to improve their commutes, track their success and become aware of how their behavior impacts the transport infrastructure as a whole.”

Five judges will test the work of finalists to determine who best gamifies the idea of adapting different transport models to urban mobility. Judges include: Will Farrelly, User Experience Innovation, Ford Smart Mobility, Ford of Europe; Cologne Game Lab co-director Bjoern Bartholdy; Professor Paolo Tumminelli, Köln International School of Design; Dan Greenawalt of Turn 10 Studios; and Tracy Fullerton, director of the USC Games Program.

“Gaming offers a degree of user engagement and empowerment that you don’t get from other mediums,” Washington said. “By utilising these qualities the Smart Mobility Game Challenge can help develop solutions that enable travellers to take control of their journeys.”
