When one thinks of popular vehicle brands in Germany, the list of likely contenders is typically limited to native names. This preconception may make the news that Ford of Germany finished 2017 as the third best-selling brand in the country all the more surprising, but given that Ford has seen its registrations grow in Germany for five consecutive years, it shouldn’t be. Ford estimates that around 61,000 more customers in Germany went with Ford in 2017 than in 2012, when the company initiated the growth phase that carries on today.

“The strong results of the past year show that our product and sales strategy is right and is accepted by our customers,” said Vice Chairman of the Management Board of Ford-Werke GmbH and Managing Director of Marketing and Sales Wolfgang Kopplin. “Sales figures for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles gave us third place in the manufacturer’s ranking, a historic result in the German market as a whole.”

Registrations for Ford passenger and light commercial vehicles totaled 292,252 units in 2017, up 3.1% year-over-year or 8,874 vehicles better than its total from 2016. Ford of Germany also closed out the year with improved market share, growing by 0.1 percentage points to 7.7%.

Ford delivered 246,578 cars in Germany in 2017, up 7,000 vehicles from 2016 and giving the Blue Oval a 7.2% share of the passenger car market. Commercial vehicle sales totaled 45,739 vehicles, giving Ford a 12.5% market share and improving over 2016’s CV market share by 0.5 percentage points.
