Ford has announced that it will be contributing $400,000 to the Cass Community Social Services’ Tiny Homes project to revitalize Detroit neighborhoods. The $1.5 million initiative will see approximately 25 homes ranging from 250-400 square feet in size erected on 30 x 100-foot lots at the north end of CCSS’ campus. The homes are being built in order to provide permanent housing for individuals and couples in need.

“Cass Community’s tiny homes project presents an opportunity to make a big difference in an underserved Detroit neighborhood,” said Jim Vella, president, Ford Motor Company Fund and Community Services. “Ford has a proud legacy of giving back to Detroit and Southeast Michigan, and this type of transformational project aligns with our mission of making people’s lives better through innovation.”

Among those accommodated by the Tiny Home Open House project are college students, senior citizens, members of the Cass Community Social Services staff, and the homeless, all of whom qualify as low-income citizens. Taking up residence in one of the Tiny Homes for seven years will qualify individuals and couples for the opportunity to take ownership of both the home and the property.

The first of the Tiny Homes opened up on September 8th, and the next six are currently being constructed on Monterey Street with completion expected by the end of October.

“We are immeasurably grateful to the Ford Motor Company Fund and our other generous supporters for helping us build Detroit’s first tiny home community,” said Rev. Faith Fowler, executive director, Cass Community Social Services. “The Cass Tiny Homes development is so much more than housing. It is a novel anti-poverty program that will transform the residents and this neighborhood while it helps to protect the planet.”
