Ford Motor Credit Company announced today a new leasing pilot program, called Ford Credit Link, that will allow customers in Austin, Texas to ostensibly split a vehicle among a small group of friends, family, or neighbors.

According to Ford, the program will kick off next month with leases being offered to self-organized groups of between three and six individuals of any relationship.

“People already are sharing everything—from books to homes,” said David McClelland, Ford Credit executive vice president, Marketing and Sales. “We’re seeing the potential for a shift from a single consumer paying for a single vehicle to several people sharing costs and benefits. Ford Credit Link makes Ford vehicles more readily available to people who may not want or need their own vehicle but have mobility requirements that must be met.”

The program allows participants to reserve drive times, check on the status of the vehicle, communicate with one another, and make payments through a vehicle plug-in device and free app. The leases are being offered in 24-month increments at three dealerships in Austin, and if it proves successful, it will likely expand to additional locations thereafter.
