Ford wrapped up a successful 2014 campaign with its best December sales result since 2005. Overall, Ford moved 210,981 vehicles in December, marking a slight improvement over the sales of December 2013 but still good enough to hit the best monthly total the company has seen in nine years.

The long-awaited launch of the 2015 F-150 aided the F-Series in moving 74,355 units in December, leading the pack for Ford. Bringing Ford’s 2014 sales total to 753,851 units, December is a fitting cap to what will be the F-Series’ 33rd year as the best-selling vehicle in America and 38th year as the best-selling truck in America.

Consistent with December sales trends, car sales were down almost entirely across the board. The lone exception: the 2015 Ford Mustang. Ford’s long-awaited next-gen pony car roared into its second full month of sales by moving 9,511 units, improving upon December 2013 sales by a whopping 66.1%. The momentum was enough to close the gap significantly on the segment-leading Camaro, but not enough to overtake it in 2014. Given its early success, 2015 is likely to be a different story entirely.

Also gaining in December were the Escape with 25,603 units sold (+4.7%), Explorer with 16,632 units sold (+6.2%), and Transit Connect with 5,012 units (+32.3%). Escape and Transit connect posted best-ever December sales and full-year sales, and the Explorer put in its best full-year performance in nine years.
