Students from Yerba Buena High School accept awards from Ford Driving Dreams

Ford has announced that, in collaboration with Northern California Ford Dealers, it will be awarding in excess of $65,000 in scholarships and technology prizes to 87 high- and middle-schoolers in NoCal. The awards will be handed out as part of the Ford Driving Dreams program.

According to Ford, approximately 80% of the recipients chosen are planning to pursue degrees in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) disciplines. It is also noted that most recipients will be attended university in California, a state which is projected to have the most available STEM jobs by 2018.

The winners were chosen in an essay contest, with recipients representing the following high schools: Andrew Hill High School, James Lick High School, William C. Overfelt High School, and Yerba Buena High School. Recipients also represent the following youth organizations: Boys and Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley, Fresno County, Marin and Southern Sonoma Counties, Monterey County, and Greater Sacramento.

“The Northern California Ford Dealers want to give back to their communities and by working jointly with Ford Fund, we are able to help our young people reach their academic dreams and achieve a brighter future,” said Joe Ávila, community outreach manager, Ford Motor Company Fund. “Connecting with our local schools has been amazing and it feels great to close the school year knowing that Ford will make a college education more accessible for many students.”

Ford Motor Company Fund spends $10 million annually on creating scholarships and developing educational initiatives such as the Ford Blue Oval Scholars, Ford College Community Challenge, and Ford STEAM Lab.
