With his 11th-place finish Saturday at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Ford driver Chris Buescher was able to win his first championship in NASCAR’s Xfinity Series.

Coming into the race with an 18 point lead in the overall points standings, all Buescher had to do was finish the race 13th or better and he would win the championship, no matter how good his competition faired.

“That was such an amazing race,” said Buescher. “I was just being careful. We had good speed; we just had to be careful out there. … I’m just so glad we could pull it off.”

The 2015 season was only Buescher’s second in the Xfinty Series and his championship gave team owner, Jack Roush, his fifth Xfinity Series title.

In total, Buescher won two races this season in his No. 60 Ford Mustang and he also finished in the top-10 a total of 20 times. In addition, Buescher won more than $1 million in prize money this year, according to ESPN.

Overshadowed by Buescher’s championship was the fact that Chip Ganassi Racing driver Kyle Larson actually won Saturday’s race at Homestead, but instead of performing the typical post race burnouts like race winners usually do, he showed class and deferred to Buescher.

“This is championship week and this is all about, the champions. So congrats to Chris Buescher,” Larson said. “I wanted him to celebrate. It’s always kind of odd when I was sitting in the stands and there were two cars doing burnouts. I wanted Chris to have to his moment there.”
