Ford fans enjoy the Driving Skills for Life Program.

In 2003, Ford established the Ford Driving Skills for Life program in order to better educate teenagers and new drivers as to the risks they face on roadways. Entering its second decade in 2014, Ford Driving Skills for Life  will be looking to expand its reach by offering a wider variety of content to those who are learning to drive for the very first time.

Among these new facets of Ford Driving Skills for Life is the goal of warding teenagers off of the growing trend of driving selfies. Yes, people actually take their hands off the wheel and their eyes off the road while driving because they feel there is no better time to throw up a peace sign and make duck lips than whilst behind the wheel. While Ford’s press release confirms that their hands-on simulations will address the distraction that taking selfies while driving causes, there was no word as to whether or not Ford Driving Skills for Life would belabor the point that taking selfies is an annoying enough practice in general and is a trend that can’t die fast enough.

“Over the last 10 years we have taken pride in our ability to adjust the curriculum to keep up with the constantly changing world awaiting teens and other new drivers,” said Jim Graham, Ford Driving Skills for Life manager, in the release. “We listen to the needs and concerns of teen drivers, and modify the program to keep it fresh and relevant.”

2014 will also mark the debut of the drunk driving suit in America. Previously utilized in Europe, the drunk driving suit will allow teens/first-time drivers to simulate the effects of being under the influence of alcohol while driving. This includes adding weights to the arms and legs in order to replicate the feeling of being cumbersome while impaired.

In 2014, Ford Driving Skills for Life will hold hands-on driving programs in at least the following 11 U.S. cities (with more to possibly be announced at a later date): Dallas, Tex; Springfield, Ill.; Chicago, Ill; Detroit, Mich; Salt Lake City, Utah; Denver, Colo; Kansas City, Kan.; Indianapolis, Ind; Charleston, W.Va.; Phoenix, Ariz; and Tucson, Ariz.
