Chances are pretty good that if you happen to see a camouflaged automobile tooling around on US soil, it’s probably a mule being tested for eventual release. If that mule bears a striking resemblance to a vehicle that isn’t typically sold in the United States, it’s a fair guess that its status is about to change. So when a camo-wrapped Ford EcoSport is spotted testing in America for the second time in six months, it is not too much of a leap to say that one of Ford’s four new SUVs is going to be the internationally-sold favorite.

Autoblog happened across some spy photos of an EcoSport being tested in Detroit last month, which would seem to indicate that it is American-bound. This time out, much more of the front end is left revealed, showing a different face with a higher-mounted grille comparable to that of the 2017 Escape.

Ford has promised four brand-new SUVs by 2020, and the EcoSport has long been considered a lock for one of those spots, along with the revived Bronco badge. Ford points to industry analysis, which maintains that as much as 40% of all new vehicle sales by 2020 could be crossovers and SUVs, as a primary motivator for this product onslaught.

At present, Ford’s lineup is lacking a subcompact CUV, and the EcoSport would fill in that spot quite nicely.

Autoblog suggests that Ford could wait until the new Fiesta bows before building a new third-generation EcoSport specifically for the US market, but this approach would likely leave Ford out of the subcompact crossover market until much later this decade. Reports going as far back as 2014 have the EcoSport arriving in America by next year.
