Ford will offer a 10-speed automatic transmission for the 2017 F-150 (and F-150 Raptor), and to tease out the anticipation for interested parties, it offered up a look at what the instrument panel will look like for those trucks.

What a cluster!

The 2017 Ford F-150 equipped with the recently-announced second-gen 3.5-liter EcoBoost will be mated to the 10-speed automatic, delivering best-in-class torque and making it perfect for hauling and trailering purposes. Because Ford also announced that every F-150 equipped with an EcoBoost engine will come standard with Auto Start-Stop, it is also a fair bet that these trucks will be among the most fuel efficient on the road.

“The Ford truck team lives to serve our hardworking truck customers,” said Raj Nair, Ford executive vice president, Product Development, and chief technical officer. “The powertrain is the heart of every F-150, and together our all-new 3.5-liter EcoBoost and 10-speed transmission will give our customers better power, efficiency and confidence.”

Ford’s new transmission is the first volume-production 10-speed automatic on the market, and it will provide a considerable upgrade from the previous models’ six-speed automatic in terms of acceleration, performance, and efficiency.

It will also be the first transmission built by Ford that does not incorporate cast-iron, meaning that it will be significantly lighter than its predecessor, thus also contributing to better fuel efficiency. The transmission also utilizes an integrated torque converter and turbine clutch, saving an additional two pounds.

Ford announced in April that it would be investing $1.4 billion at its Livonia Transmission Plant to support 500 jobs needed for the production of the 10-speed automatic.
