HBCU Community Challenge

Ford announced that it will once again hold its Ford HBCU Community Challenge, which will encourage students enrolled at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) the chance to compete for $75,000 in scholarships and prizes.

“Building upon the success and excitement from last year, we are eager to see the ingenuity of the students’ submissions,” said Shawn Thompson, manager, Ford Multicultural Marketing. “The forward thinking and fresh approaches to sustainability are inspiring. We look forward to the presentations in Dearborn.”

In order to win their share of the purse, student teams must submit proposals to address various issues affecting their communities. The theme, as ever, is “Building Sustainable Communities,” meaning that each proposal should address at least one of the following: mobility, alternative energy, sustainability, and water conservation.

Three teams will be chosen to present their proposals to a panel of judges, including radio host Tom Joyner, at Ford World Headquarters in December. Each finalist will earn a grant that will allow the team to utilize its work in the community.

The Ford HBCU Community Challenge will once again be the result of a partnership between Ford Motor Company, Ford Motor Company Fund, and both the Tom Joyner and Rickey Smiley Morning Shows. Listeners of those shows will be able to vote for the finalists online starting November 23rd and concluding December 6th.

Proposals will be due November 1st, finalists will be chosen November 18th, and the winners will be selected December 10th.
