Ford Kicks Off Production at New Plant in Sanand, Gujarat
Ford not only announced last month that it would be launching a new compact car—the Figo Aspire—particularly for the Indian market, but it also kicked off production at the automaker’s vehicle manufacturing facility and engine plant in Sanand, Gujarat.
An official ceremony was held on March 26th at the new facility and was attended by Smt. Anandiben Patel, Honourable Chief Minister of Gujarat in presence of Sh. Saurabhbhai Patel, Minister of Finance and Sh. Vijaybhai Rupani, Minister of Transport, and various other senior officials from the government of Gujarat.
Ford President and CEO Mark Fields was also on-hand for the ceremony.
“With today’s opening of our plant in Sanand, we have taken our growth commitment to a new high in India,” said Fields. “We are doubling our manufacturing capacity in India, creating good jobs and serving our customers around the world with great products.”
The facilities cover 460 acres in Sanand and are the result of more than $1 billion in investments since the original groundbreaking took place in September 2011. Ford anticipates that the manufacturing facility will have an initial annual capacity of 240,000 units, and that the engine plant will have an initial annual capacity of 270,000 units.
