Ford Leads Off New Year with Record SUV Sales, Best Start for F-Series in 13 Years
Ford Motor Company reported retail sales of 120,400 vehicles for January, up 6% year-over-year from its start to 2016. A 13% decrease in fleet sales—including daily rentals, commercial, and government fleets—led FMC’s overall sales to decrease 0.6% at 172,612 units. Total SUV sales were up 7% at 58,732 units, total truck sales were up 5.5% at 72,579 units, and car sales were down 17.5% at 41,301 units.
“The new year brought strong consumer demand for F-Series, Lincoln, and record SUV sales, especially high-end models,” said Mark LaNeve, Ford vice president, US Marketing, Sales, and Service. “This drove near-record company average transaction prices for Ford, up $2,500 versus a year ago and far outpacing the overall January industry increase of $550.”

Total Ford brand sales were down 1.6% at 163,827 units. Ford car sales declined 20% from January 2016 at 38,024 units, with only the Fiesta and Police Interceptor Sedan seeing year-over-year increases.
Ford-branded SUV sales were up 6% at 53,224 units, good for the brand’s best-ever start in terms of SUV sales. The Escape led the way with 20,588 units, up 7.1% year-over-year, followed by the Explorer (15,294 units, up 7.2%), Edge (9,091 units, down 4.6%), and Expedition (4,064 units, up 42.3%).
Ford truck sales were up 5.5% at 72,579 units. Ford F-Series sales totaled 57,995 units, up 12.5% from the 51,540 units sold in January 2016 and good for the F-Series’ best start to a year since 2004. Heavy truck sales were up 14.5% at 1,426 units, E-Series sales were up 11.2% at 3,290 units, Transit sales were down 19.3% at 7,770 units, and Transit Connect was down 38.5% at 2,098 units.
Lincoln Motor Company kicked off 2017 by delivering 8,785 vehicles, up 22.4% year-over-year. Lincoln’s sales were led by the its five newest vehicle offerings: MKX sales were up 42.7% at 2,928 units, MKZ sales were up 7.4% at 2,090 units, MKC sales were up 16.2% at 1,668 units, and Continental sales totaled 1,167 units.
