Ford once again led the United Kingdom auto industry in terms of total vehicle sales, car sales, and commercial vehicle sales and retail car and commercial vehicle sales in April. The automaker delivered a total of 23,062 vehicles in the UK, good for a 13.2% market share and a 4.5-percentage point lead over its nearest rival.

Car sales totaled 16,183 units registered, 2,838 units ahead of the second-place brand. Light and commercial vehicle sales totaled 7,092 units, capturing a 29.5% market share and putting Ford’s share 16.5% ahead of the second most-popular automaker.

Total industry sales, according to Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, were down 19.8% at 152,076 units.

“Following our record sales performance in March, and the rush to avoid the VED tax rise, April was always going to be a slower month. Fiesta  and Transit Custom continue to reinforce our long-standing leadership position in the UK, delivered through the strongest UK dealer network. Five vehicles in the UK top 20 and eight Ford vehicles leading their segments firmly underline the success of our exciting model range,” said Andy Barratt, Ford of Britain chairman and managing director.

“The UK car market remains strong and we continue to see significant growth in our EcoSport and Kuga models, which have been enjoying robust sales this year; and, this summer, we see the most technologically-advanced next-generation Ford Fiesta arriving in dealerships,” Barratt added.

The Ford Fiesta remained the best-selling passenger car in the UK with 4,957 registrations in total and 2,268 registrations at retail. Fiesta Van, Transit, Transit Connect, Transit Courier, and Transit Custom all finished in the top three in their segments, with Transit Custom leading total CV sales for the month.
