CDP Water A List 2016

For the second year in a row, Ford has been granted an “A” by CDP for its water conservation efforts. Ford is one of only 24 companies to earn the CDP’s highest mark, and it earned plaudits from the not-for-profit in its latest report, Thirsty business: Why water is vital to climate action.

“The business case for action to improve water security has never been stronger or more urgent,” says Morgan Gillespy, head of water at CDP. “We congratulate Ford Motor Company for achieving a position on CDP’s Water A List. The company is responding to market demand for environmental accountability and at the same time making progress toward achieving a water-secure world. And, as our report shows, this will make a difference to companies working to fulfill their carbon reduction potential and the sustainable development goals.”

Ford water strategy

Last month, Ford announced its aspirations to cut water usage by 72% by the year 2020 and utilize zero potable drinking water in the vehicle manufacturing process. From 2000 to 2015, Ford has conserved an estimated 10 billion gallons of water and decreased its use of water by 61% in the process.

The report’s case study spotlighting Ford called attention to its methods for cutting water use, including its Partnership for a Cleaner Environment Program (PACE) and efforts made to engage the Ford Volunteer Corps with initiatives including the Bill Ford Better World Challenge and the Better World Project.

“We recognize water is a critical resource, so we established an aggressive 2020 target, building on our successful reduction efforts to date,” says Andrew Hobbs, Director, Environmental Quality Office. “We are exploring innovative ways to reduce our footprint, starting with our aspirational goal of zero potable water use in our manufacturing processes. From there, we have a final goal of zero water withdrawal for our manufacturing processes.”

CDP considered the merits of more than 600 companies when compiling its Water A List. Ford was one of only three automakers to be named on this year’s list.
