The Ford Mustang is one of America’s most recognizable icons, so it makes sense to celebrate its 50th anniversary with a trip to another iconic American landmark—the Empire State Building. On April 16-17, the all-new 2015 Mustang convertible will climb 86 floors of the Empire State Building to the famous observatory, recreating the same feat it accomplished 50 years ago.

“New York is one of the greatest cities in the world, and it’s the place where the Ford Mustang Story began 50 years ago,” said Mark Fields, Ford chief operating officer. “We’re thrilled to be visiting the architectural landmark that has been the heart of the Manhattan skyline for 83 years with the newest generation of the car that is the soul of Ford Motor Company.”

Because there is no crane that can reach the 86th floor observatory and the high spire prevents a helicopter from placing the 2015 Ford Mustang easily at that level, there is only one viable option for transport—the building’s elevators.  A technical team is currently disassembling the new Mustang into sections that will allow it to fit easily into the elevators, with the plan to assemble the pony car when it finally reaches its destination 86 stories high.
