Ford Mustang Sales See Massive Gains in March
Ford’s US sales number for March are in, and while the number was ultimately down year-over-year, it was good enough to give the automaker a 2.0%-better first quarter than the previous year. Among the standouts that carried Ford to a respectable month was a stellar performance from one of its most vaunted names.
The Ford brand and Ford Motor Company as a whole were down 3.4% for the month of March. All told, Ford pulled in 235,929 sales between 227,234 units for Ford and 8,695 units for Lincoln. These figures were good enough to push Ford to 573,185 units for the first quarter of 2015—a 2.1% increase—and Lincoln to 21,478 units.
Ford mostly lauded the success of retail sales, which were largely up across the board. While the F-Series was down 4.6% all together, it was up 10% from a retail perspective.
“Our retail performance was driven by gains across our utility van and truck lineups with strong consumer acceptance of the all-new F-150,” said Mark LaNeve, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service. “We are especially pleased to post our best retail March sales performance in nine years, despite tight supply across our F-Series lineup.”
Across the board, sales were largely tepid with few exceptions. Ford delivered 17% more Explorers in March with 20,765 units sold, sales of the Transit Connect continued to increase steadily, and the new Transit accounted for 9,751 units in what shaped up to be Ford’s best March for commercial van sales since 1994.
The real star of March was the Mustang, which not only staked its claim as the pony car to beat, but may have very well already put a stake through the Camaro’s heart with 12,663 units sold. To date, the all-new Mustang is performing 52.1% better than the 2014 model was at the same time last year.
