Ford has staved off the competition for another year in the race for the hearts and minds of America’s pony car-lovers thanks to a range of improvements to the 2018 Ford Mustang.

The 2018 Ford Mustang, which dropped the venerable V6 base engine and beefed up its 5.0-liter V8 to make this year’s Mustang GT the fastest ever built, saw sales totaling 81,866 vehicles in 2017. Though this was a 22.7% decline from sales of 105,932 Mustangs in 2016, it was more than enough to obliterate the sales of Mustang’s two closest competitors.

The Chevrolet Camaro saw its sales drop just 6.6%, but its total 2017 sales of 67,940 vehicles was just shy of 14,000 vehicles less than that of the Ford Mustang. This put the Camaro just ahead of the Dodge Challenger, which finished 2017 slightly ahead of its 2016 sales with a total of 64,537 vehicles delivered.

Since the introduction of the sixth-generation Ford Mustang in late 2014, Ford took the top spot among the three pony car competitors in 2015 and 2016. The introduction of the 2018 Ford Mustang late in the year helped drive 9.2% year-over-year growth in December with 7,714 vehicles delivered. Comparatively, the Camaro ate a massive 45.7% loss in sales volume in December with just 3,802 vehicles delivered, while Challenger posted a 14% loss at 4,508 vehicles delivered.

With the popularity of the revamped Mustang escalating, Ford is likely to continue its sales supremacy in 2018, particularly if the Mustang Shelby GT500 makes its long-awaited return.
