Ford Mustang Was Earth’s Best-Selling Sports Car in 2016
On the strength of major upticks in sales in markets like Germany and China and a continued rollout into new global markets like the nations of Caledonia and Gibraltar, the Ford Mustang captured the title of best-selling sports car on Earth in 2016. According to IHS Markit new vehicle registration data, more than 150,000 Mustangs were sold around the globe in 2016, up 6% from 2015. That’s a whole lot of ponies, people.
“The legacy of Mustang continues to grow, and in places it never reached before,” said Mark Schaller, Ford Mustang marketing manager. “We continue to make it available in new markets, and drivers in those markets continue to respond with resounding approval.”

International market growth for the Ford Mustang increased 101% in 2016 as nearly one third of all sales came from markets outside of the United States. Sales of the Mustang in China, the world’s single largest new car market, were up 74% from 2015. Between 2015-16, Ford’s Mustang exports doubled to 17.5% of all Mustangs manufactured; Ford expects that exports of the 2017 Mustang will reach 30%.
With the 2018 Mustang, Ford will bring its prized pony to six new countries—including Brazil, the Ivory Coast, the Palau Islands, and three as-yet-unnamed markets. Presently, the Mustang is available in 140 countries and on every continent except for Antarctica—though that’s probably the next domino to fall. There has been no indication given as to when Ford expects to sell its first Mustang on the moon, but it probably isn’t all that far off.
