Ford of Europe Gets Big May Boost from Strong SUV Sales

Ford of Europe saw a 6% uptick in sales in its traditional Euro 20 markets in May, delivering a total of 118,000 vehicles. Ford was led by a 17% rise in SUV sales at a total of 19,100 vehicles delivered, led by increases in demand for the EcoSport, Kuga, and Edge.

“The trend of strong Ford SUV sales continued in May, with Kuga, EcoSport, and Edge up a combined 17%,” said Roelant de Waard, Vice President of Marketing, Sales, and Service for Ford of Europe. “The Ford Transit lineup and Ford Ranger continued their leadership in the commercial vehicle market in May as well, supporting our total vehicle sales increase of 6% and market share growth in three key European markets.”

Ford’s commercial vehicle sales were up 16% at 29,800 units, and commercial vehicle market share increased 0.7 percentage points to 13.3%. Passenger vehicle sales also increased, up 3% year-over-year at 88,200 vehicles delivered, but market share fell 0.3 percentage points to 6.4%. Ford’s total vehicle market share in the Euro 20 was also down 0.1 percentage point at 7.4%.

Ford notes that more than 70% of its passenger vehicle sales came from retail and fleet customers in its top five European markets (Britain, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain), outpacing the industry average for the month by 6 percentage points. Sales in those markets were up a total of 7%, but market share was down 0.4 percentage points.

Ford’s five biggest markets for the month in terms of volume were Britain (29,600 vehicles), Germany (27,500 vehicles), Italy (15,700 vehicles), Turkey (11,300 vehicles), and France (10,700 vehicles). Share-wise, Ford was led by Britain (13.6%, down 0.3 points), Turkey (12.9%, up 1.9 points), Hungary (11.7%, down 0.5 points), Finland (9.2%, down 0.4 points), and Ireland (8.8%, down 3.8 points).
