2016 Ford Explorer

Strange to think that it’s been half a year since Ford unveiled its 2016 Explorer at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. Even stranger to think that we are now just a few months away from said Explorer hitting the market at last. To help get everyone good and prepped for all future exploration, Ford is outlining a bit of what’s new and good in its best-selling SUV.

“Customers love Explorer, and they expect it to continue to lead the way in innovation, performance and fun,” said Arie Groeneveld, chief engineer for the new Explorer. “That’s the challenge we embraced when we set out to build the best SUV in the world.”

Along with the much-discussed 2.3-liter EcoBoost powertrain option, the addition of intelligent four-wheel drive, and an all-new Platinum trim, the new Explorer sports a number of brand new technologies that help it live up to the namebadge’s long legacy and surpass all of its predecessors in one fell swoop.

New for the 2016 model are front and rear cameras with wide-angle lenses and a class-exclusive camera washer; enhanced active park assist with perpendicular park assist, park-out assist, and semi-automatic parallel parking; smart-charging USB ports in the front and rear of the vehicle; hands-free liftgate; exclusive 500-watt Sony Audio System (only for Platinum trim); Active Grille Shutter; and drag-reducing air curtains.

Carryover features include adaptive cruise control and collision warning with brake support; lane-keeping system; BLIS®, cross-traffic alert, and auto high-beams.

“Explorer helped define how the world thinks about SUVs,” said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president and chief technical officer, Global Product Development. “Explorer is the centerpiece of Ford’s global utility vehicle lineup because it delivers an ideal combination of form and function. And with well over 7 million already sold, nearly everyone has an Explorer story.”

Deliveries are expected to begin in early summer for all models but the Platinum edition, which will arrive later in the summer.
