It’ll be a few years yet before the Ford Ranger makes its long-awaited return to the United States, but it hasn’t stopped being a sales force in markets across the globe during its sabbatical. Ford reported on Wednesday that the Ranger has achieved a new first-half sales record in Asia Pacific thanks to deliveries totaling 63,525 mid-size pickups and a 21% year-over-year increase in demand.

The Ranger’s record performance during the first six months of the year was expedited considerably by record first-half sales in Australia, where sales are up 19% through six months at a total of 21,638 vehicles delivered, and in the Philippines, where sales are up nearly 16% and the Ranger owns a 25% share.

In Taiwan, Vietnam, and Thailand, the Ranger saw record first-half sales (up approximately 29%, 2%, and 51% respectively) and held down the top-seller spot among pickups. In New Zealand, it also saw a record first half (up 24%) on the way to becoming the country’s best-selling vehicle overall.

“Demand for Ford Ranger continues to rise as consumer needs evolve towards a versatile vehicle that can be used for both work and play,” said Mark Ovenden, vice president, marketing, sales, and service, Ford Asia Pacific. “The unmatched combination of smart technologies, design, fuel-efficiency, and comfort of the Ranger represents everything that our customers look for in a versatile pick-up truck and we expect demand will continue to rise.”

Ford notes that the Ranger has also become the top-selling pickup truck in emerging markets like Cambodia and New Caledonia. It seems fair to say that the Ranger should be returning to America with plenty of global momentum behind it.
