Ford Reveals 10-Year Revitalization Project for Dearborn Facilties

Ford today revealed plans for a decade-long transformation process that will see its Dearborn, Michigan, facilities become more modern and eco-friendly as the company transitions into its secondary identity as a mobility company.

The transformation process will result in the reconstruction of more than 7.5 million square feet of space and will collocate 30,000 employees working across 70 buildings into a new product campus and World Headquarters-centric campus.

The product campus will include a design center; employee services including on-demand shuttles, eBikes, and autonomous vehicles; more green spaces; and wireless speeds up to 10 times greater than what is currently available at Ford’s facilities, all encompassed by walkways and trails. This campus is estimated to house 24,000 employees over 4.5 million square feet upon completion. It will also feature the zero-waste, net zero-energy, net zero-water Sustainability Showcase building, pictured below, which Ford says will meet Living Building Challenge standards by generating more energy than it utilizes through geothermal heating and cooling and solar energy.

The Ford World Headquarters Campus will feature the same emphasis on employee services, connectivity, and accessibility, and will house a new Ford Credit facility. It will feature 1.3 million square feet of reworked space, a renewed Arjay Miller Arboretum, and recreation facilities including soccer and softball fields.

“As we transition to an auto and a mobility company, we’re investing in our people and the tools they use to deliver our vision,” said Ford President and CEO Mark Fields. “Bringing our teams together in an open, collaborative environment will make our employees’ lives better, speed decision-making and deliver results for both our core and emerging businesses.”

Construction for the product campus is set to get underway at the Ford Research and Engineering Center this month, with the majority of work scheduled for completion by 2023. Ford will begin construction on the World Headquarters campus in 2021, and work is expected to be complete by 2026.
