Ford Rumored to Be Building New Plant in San Luis Potosi
According to three anonymous Mexican officials, Ford will soon be announcing the construction of a new manufacturing plant in San Luis Potosi. Two of these officials, who are said to be familiar with Ford’s plans in the country, claim that the plant will have an estimated annual output of 350,000 vehicles. The third states that Ford’s investment in the plant should total a little more than 1.5 billion USD.
As could be reasonably expected, Ford declined comment, with company spokesperson Kelli Felker telling Reuters, “We do not comment on speculation.”
There was no suggestion as far as which Ford vehicle will be built at the potential facility, but the November announcement that Focus production at its Wayne, Michigan facility would conclude by 2018 makes the next-generation Focus a prime candidate.
Ford announced in April of last year that it would be investing $2.5 billion in the construction of new engine and transmission plants in the respective locations of Chihuahua and Guanajuato. The automaker currently employs 11,300 in Mexico, including 1,100 engineers at its Engineering Center.
Ford has recently come under fire from presidential candidate and helium-filled pumpkin Donald Trump for its decision to invest in production in Mexico, which probably really hurts the automaker’s feelings.
