Ford Sales Drop 1% in China; New EcoSport Starts Strong, Lincoln Sets New Monthly Record

Total Ford Motor Company sales in China were down 1% in the month of September at a total of 97,863 vehicles delivered. Changan Ford Automobile (CAF) sales dropped 8% year-over-year at a total of 69,002 vehicles delivered; Jiangling Motor Corporation (JMC) saw a 10% sales increase with 185,288 vehicles delivered; Lincoln more than doubled its sales year-over-year, climbing 105% from September 2016 with a total of 5,240 vehicles delivered; and import vehicle sales increased 25% with 1,586 vehicles sold.

“August was a record month for Lincoln, with monthly sales exceeding 5,000 vehicles for the first time,” Mark Ovenden, vice president, Marketing, Sales, and Services, Ford Motor Company Asia Pacific. “We also saw significant gains in sales of JMC and imported Ford-branded vehicles, which grew 10% and 25%, respectively.”

Despite the 8% year-over-year decline, CAF got strong performances from the new EcoSport and the Ford Mondeo, which were up 43% and 18%, respectively. To date, CAF sales have fallen 16% with a total of 487,039 vehicles delivered.

CAF got a boost from the Ford Tourneo, which saw sales rise 140% year-over-year, as well as the continued growth of the JMC Pick-Up and success of the new JMC Teshun. JMC sales have grown 16% in the first nine months of 2017, totaling 185,288 vehicles in total.

Lincoln set yet another brand benchmark, delivering 5,240 vehicles and surpassing the 5,000-unit single-month mark for the first time since coming to China. Sales of the Navigator and MKZ more than doubled—up 112% and 108%, respectively—sales of the MKC were up 62% at 1,818 vehicles, sales of the MKX were up 46% at 1,296 vehicles, and the all-new Continental rounded out the month with deliveries totaling 996 units. Lincoln’s sales are almost double what they were through September 2016, up 94% at a running total of 34,494 vehicles.

Import sales were up across the board, with the Focus ST/RS seeing a 37% increase, Mustang seeing an 80% increase, and Explorer seeing a 4% increase. Sales of the F-150 Raptor were also strong at 88 units. To date, import sales are up 17% at 13,038 vehicles.

Through nine months, Ford’s total sales in China are down 6% at 719,859 vehicles.
