Ford Sales in China Remain Up Through April Despite Down Month

Ford announced that April deliveries of Changan Ford Automobile and Jiangling Motors Corporation vehicles and Ford Motor Company imports totaled 82,324 units, down 11% year-over-year. Despite the decline, sales through the first four months of the year are up 7% at a total of 391,294 vehicles delivered.

“China continues to be a dynamic marketplace as it transitions from an industrial economy to a consumer-led economy,” Ford said in a statement given to The Detroit News. “Importantly, our sales year-to-date continue to outpace last year’s record-setting sales.”

Changan Ford Automobile sales were down 11% in April at 58,802 units. To date, sales total 303,213 vehicles, up 14% from the total number delivered through the first four months of 2015.

Ford did not report sales figures for individual nameplates in April, though it did point out the year-to-date successes of a few of its vehicles. It was noted that Ford SUVs—including the EcoSport, Kuga, Edge, Explorer, and Everest—are up 27% through four months with more than 100,000 units delivered. The Escort was also pointed out as being a major driver of growth for the brand, with a total of 84,835 units having been sold over the course of the first third of the year.

Jiangling Motors Corporation sales were down 7% at a total of 22,165 vehicles delivered in April. Through four months, JMC sales total 82,471 vehicles, down 10% from the pace set in the first four months of 2015.

Ford also noted that it’s the CAF 1 Chongqing Assembly Plant will take down time for maintenance during the rest of the second quarter. The plant is responsible for production of the Ford EcoSport, Focus, and Mondeo.
