Ford-Werke GmbH and Deutsche Post’s StreetScooter GmbH subsidiary have announced a new partnership that will ultimately result in the creation of battery-electric delivery vans.

Production of Ford and StreetScooter’s e-vans is expected to get underway in July, and a minimum of 2,500 vehicles are expected to be put into service by Deutsche Post DHL Group by the end of 2018, which would effectively make the partnership the owner of Europe’s largest battery-electric medium-duty delivery vehicle fleet.

The e-vans will utilize Ford Transit chassis as a foundation, adding a battery-electric drivetrain and upfitting it with a body built to Deutsche Post and DHL Paket’s specs.

“I consider this partnership another important boost for electro-mobility in Germany,” said Jürgen Gerdes, member of the executive board of the Deutsche Post AG. “This step emphasizes that Deutsche Post is an innovation leader. It will relieve the inner cities and increase the people’s quality of life. We will continue working on completely carbon neutral CO2-neutral logistics.”

“E-Mobility and innovative traffic solutions for urban areas are key focuses for us as we transform our business to meet future challenges,” said Steven Armstrong, group vice president and president Europe, Middle East and Africa, Ford Motor Company. “As the leader in commercial vehicles in Europa, this partnership plays perfectly to our strengths and in StreetScooter and the Deutsche Post DHL Group we have a partner with enormous competence and a worldwide network.”

StreetScooter also revealed that it intends to increase output of its emissions-free StreetScooter delivery van to 20,000 units a year.
