Ford SUV sales around the globe are on the rise, and there’s little reason to believe that momentum is going to stop.

Ford announced that its global utility lineup—which includes everything from the EcoSport and Edge to Expedition and Explorer—made up 23% of all Ford sales around the world in 2013. This marks a 17% gain over the number of SUVs sold in 2012, and it gives Ford enough reason to suspect that 29% of all of its sales by the year 2020 will be wrapped up in utility vehicles.

“The success of the One Ford plan is continuing to pay off,” said Jim Farley, Ford executive vice president, Global Marketing, Sales and Service. “As utility vehicle demand rises around the world, our global lineup of vehicles, like EcoSport, Escape/Kuga and Edge, is helping us grow our share. The global desire for new utility vehicles is driving expansion in developing markets like China and helping the Ford brand reach more customers.”

According to IHS Automotive, demand for utilities is up 88% since the recession, which would make it the fastest-growing segment in all of automotive during that span. Nearly one in every five vehicles that sell around the globe in 2014 will be a utility, and the increased focus on efficiency and innovation is a large reason for the reenergizing of the segment.

Ford SUV sales are thriving in China and Europe in particular. In China, Ford’s EcoSport, Edge, Explorer, and Kuga are all selling at or above expectations. In Europe, the newest iterations of the Edge and EcoSport are Ford’s latest additions to a growing market for CUVs and SUVs.

In the US, the Escape and Explorer are both coming off of record Octobers, and the all-new 2015 Edge has done a great deal to excite potential crossover shoppers.
