Ford Thinks Sailor Moon Drives a Ford Fusion
In a series of commercials released by Ford this year, the automaker records new English dialogue for several famous foreign language shows (like Japanese anime and Spanish telenovellas) and video games, a process called overdubbing, as a way to advertise for new Ford vehicles. One of the shows that received this treatment was the old Sailor Moon anime from the 1990s. If you don’t understand what I’m talking about, check out the video below.

In the original scene, Usagi (off-duty Sailor Moon) is gazing up at the stars and thinking about her crush, Tuxedo Mask. In the new Ford commercial, she is drooling over a constellation she thinks looks like the new Ford Fusion. She especially loves the new exterior and the fact that its Lightning Blue exterior color would go well with her uniform, which features a dark blue skirt. Luna, her talking cat adviser, chimes in helpfully to remind her of all the high-tech safety features, like Pre-Collision Assist, that make the Ford Fusion a great car.

If you managed to get through that whole paragraph without rolling your eyes, congratulations, you probably have watched some Sailor Moon in your youth. My Girl Scout troop would regularly pass around the latest issues of the comic books, and I remember running home after school to catch episodes of the show on Cartoon Network’s Toonami. You better believe that I also watch the new Sailor Moon series, Sailor Moon Crystal, as new episodes are released on Hulu.
Many Sailor Moon fans are just as nostalgic as I am, so Ford choosing the cartoon for one of its overdubs is actually pretty smart. I would just say that it picked the wrong vehicle for Usagi. When I think of the Ford Fusion, I usually think of a vehicle that is perfect for someone older and more settled than a crybaby superhero that is still in school and runs all over town at odd hours of the night, fighting evil by moonlight. That’s why I would expect the Outer Sailor Scouts (Sailors Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto) to be driving a Ford Fusion instead, as they are much older and are in charge of a small child.*

If we had to put Sailor Moon into a Ford, I would probably choose a Ford Mustang convertible. Her hair would look awesome flowing in the wind, and it’s an enjoyable ride she would be comfortable behind the wheel in.
However, Usagi/Sailor Moon is notoriously terrible with money, so in reality she would probably be driving a certified pre-owned Ford Fiesta that her parents had to co-sign on the loan for.

If I could pick a car outside of the Ford brand, Sailor Moon would be behind the wheel of a new Mazda MX-5 Miata. It is also a convertible, but it looks a bit more fun to drive than the Ford Mustang with its smaller, more agile form. It doesn’t hurt that the Miata is made by a Japanese automaker, which is the perfect fit for a Japanese cartoon character.
I can’t wait to see if Ford continues this Overdub commercial series, if only so I can geek out about another show from my childhood.
