Ford Men of Courage

Ford has announced that its pre-existing partnership with both the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and Detroit Newspapers in Education will offer up to $10,000 in scholarships as part of a program to recognize the contributions of African-American men throughout history.

“Ford has a long history of recognizing unsung heroes in the African American community,” said Shawn Wilson, multicultural manager, Ford Motor Company Fund, the charitable arm of Ford Motor Company. “This year we are proud to honor African American Men of Courage for their contributions and strong personal character as a way to build and strengthen communities.”

The Ford Freedom Award educational program includes a classroom poster, teacher’s guide, and 16-page supplement, available online at www.dnie.com, all of which highlight and outline notable achievements made by and on behalf of African-Americans. This supplement will be made available to around 1,000 students in Michigan between the fourth and eighth grade, who are then encouraged to pen an essay for the African-American Men of Courage contest.

These essays should discuss in detail how individuals embody the values of courage and dignity in the face of adversity, and then apply those values to their own lives and discuss how they will use those values to improve their communities.

The deadline for the essay contest is March 24th, and the winners will be named at the Ford Freedom Awards on May 17th at Orchestra Hall in the Max M. Fisher Music Center in Detroit.

“African American history is literally filled with ‘Men of Courage,’” said Juanita Moore, president and CEO, Wright Museum. “The thousands of schoolchildren across Michigan who participate in this year’s essay contest will be inspired by their endeavors, which demonstrate dedication, hard work, and the courage to break through barriers to achieve one’s grandest dreams.”

Just last October, Ford donated a new Ford Transit Van to the Charles H. Wright Museum as part of its 50th Anniversary Gala.
