Ford’s new Camera-Based Advanced Front Lighting System

Ford is looking to make driving at night safer than ever with advanced new lighting technology that makes it easier for drivers to spot hazards, pedestrians, and animals.

Ford’s new Camera-Based Advanced Front Lighting System includes the ability for headlamp beams to widen at junctions and roundabouts, and Spot Lighting technology—currently in-development—uses infra-red cameras to track up to eight people or animals at up to 120 meters.

“Many people who drive at night have had to quickly react to someone or something suddenly appearing in the road – as if from nowhere. Ford’s Camera-Based Advanced Front Lighting System and Spot Lighting help ensure the driver is quickly alerted to people or animals that could present a danger,” said Ken Washington, vice president, Ford Research and Advanced Engineering.

The Camera-Based Advanced Front Lighting System also utilizes GPS technology to determine where hazards might occur (e.g. sharp bends, low visibility spots), and all information gathered is stored by the camera to be used again the next time the vehicle is driven down the same road.

Spot Lighting is being developed in Aachen, and it is able to spotlight two hazards with special LED lamps located next to the fog lights. These hazards are displayed on the vehicle’s information screen and highlighted in red or yellow depending on proximity.

Technology is magical.
