REPREVE fiber

Did you recently purchase a new 2015 F-150? Do you enjoy the way the comfortable cloth seats feel? Would you be incredibly surprised if I were to tell you that those seats are made up of reused plastic water bottles? Well, they are.

The cloth Ford uses in the seats of the F-150 is comprised of REPREVE fiber, which is made up entirely of recycled materials such as plastic bottles. The fiber is the creation of Unifi, which has been working with Ford for more than three years to reduce the automaker’s environmental impact.

“By using REPREVE in the all-new Ford F-150, we are reconfirming our commitment to using renewable and recyclable materials in our vehicles,” said Carol Kordich, lead designer, global sustainability materials strategy development. “We are always looking for ways to incorporate more innovative and sustainable materials into our vehicles.”

Ford uses REPREVE fiber in five vehicles around the world—including the Focus Electric and Escape—and the material is also used in a number of other products from other companies including Quiksilver, The North Face, Roxy, Blue Avocado, and Volcom.
