Ford Accelerated Action Day June

This past week marked the June iteration of the Ford Accelerated Action Day program, and dozens of Ford Volunteer Corps members took advantage of the gorgeous Detroit weather in the effort of making neighborhoods equally gorgeous spaces.

One of the larger of the nearly three dozen projects undertaken during this past Ford Accelerated Action Day was an effort to beautify an area that was once a vacant lot and is currently being reconstructed as a pavilion that will utilize rainwater catchment to irrigate flower and vegetable gardens. About two dozen volunteers helped in the process of planting and tending the grounds.

“This is awesome. We would not be able to do what we’re doing today without [Ford’s volunteers],” said Lydia Levinson, senior program manager, Michigan Community Resources. “It’s wonderful. We’re very grateful to have everybody here.”

“This is helping us tremendously,” said Tom Milano, neighborhood resident and director of The Garden Detroit. “We depend on volunteer help and the expertise of Ford volunteers, and the goodwill.”

Another large project involved 30 volunteers breaking ground on two vacant lots to literally pave the way for a pumpkin patch and vegetable garden. Another saw 50 volunteers participating in the annual Ford Green IT e-Waste Recycling Day, which managed to collect approximately 58,000 pounds of electronics for the purposes of recycling.

“Water conservation, sustainability and recycling are all part of the environmental mindset at Ford,” said Janet Lawson, director, Ford Volunteer Corps. “Our employees understand the importance of creating a better world from our largest manufacturing facilities to the small city lots in communities where we live and work.”
