This past week, Kelley Blue Book announced the winners of its annual 5-Year Cost to Own Awards, and Ford had two particularly powerful representatives on the list. The 2014 Ford Mustang was named the Best Sports Car, and the 2014 Explorer earned the title of Best Full-Size SUV/Crossover.

The vehicles earned their awards for offering the best combination of projected fuel costs and depreciation, insurance, repair and maintenance expenses, and financing costs over a five year period.

The 2014 Mustang V6 took home the Best Sports Car title with a five-year cost to own of $40,162. While we’re all likely champing at the bit to get behind the wheel of the 2015 Mustang, the current model year version is more than capable, as evidenced by its second-consecutive KBB 5-Year Cost to Own Awards victory. The six-speed manual Mustang, which gets 305 horsepower, costs less than $23,000 starting out. The superlative engineering keeps maintenance and repair costs low over the course of five years, and the 3.7-liter engine impressively delivers 31 miles per gallon highway alongside all of that horsepower.

The Explorer was named Best Full-Size SUV/Crossover for continuing to innovate the way people think about family-oriented multi-passenger transportation 13 years after its debut. In sacrificing its once-lauded off-roading potential, the 2014 Explorer offers a better precision performance that benefits substantially from three available engine choices. The total 5-year cost to own of the Explorer is $50,807 which was just enough to beat out the next-best competitor by just a bit more than $300. The second place runner-up? That would be the Explorer’s cousin, the Flex.
