Ford’s Analytics Team

In a day in age where sustainability has never been more important and more necessary, Ford’s analytics team at the automaker’s Research and Innovation Center are working to not only improve Ford’s lead on competing car makers, but to decrease its impact on our environment.

Both the group and its impact on Ford’s day-to-day operations has grown exponentially over the course of fifteen years since it was first founded.  In that time, the analytics experts—consisting of scientists, mathematicians, computers modelers, and researchers from other fields—have stayed on point in their aim to bolster Ford’s financial figures while scaling back its carbon footprint.

“I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Ford now ranks among the greenest brands in the world,” said John Viera, global director of sustainability and vehicle environmental matters, in Ford’s press release.  “The company’s investments in the field of big data analytics have continually increased during the last 15 years.”

Ford provides numerous examples of the successes the group has shared with the company, including a science-based model that projects CO2 emissions generated over a 50 year span, making the case for a diverse portfolio of alternate sustainable energy-sourced vehicles, and mathematical models for vehicle optimization and creating green tech innovations.

Ford’s analytics team is currently investigating new and exciting routes for green tech expansion, including bigger data generation, green route optimization based upon air quality impact, life-cycle analysis of energy and water use in alternative fuel sources, and expanding the use of environmentally friendly components (e.g. recycled and sustainable materials such as those found in the 2014 F-150) in future Ford models.
