Ford posted its best August sales mark in nine years last month, moving a total of 225,601 vehicles for the Ford brand and 234,237 vehicles overall (including Lincoln vehicles). The 5.4% year-over-year increase was achieved with help from monster months from the F-Series, Mustang, and SUVs.

“Customer demand for our newest vehicles made August a strong month for Ford,” said Mark LaNeve, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service. “Improved availability helped make August the strongest sales month this year for F-Series. We also had our best month of Ford SUV sales in 12 years.”

Arguably Ford’s highlight for the month was the F-Series, of which there were more than 70,000 units sold for the first time 2015. Ford sold a total of 71,332 trucks, up 4.7% from the August 2014 total and bringing the F-Series within 2,500 units of its pace through eight months last year.

Ford’s utility vehicles were up 12% overall thanks to huge months from the Edge, Explorer, and Expedition. The Edge was up 35.6% with 11,832 units sold, Explorer was up 22% with 21,658 units sold, and Expedition was up 29.7% with 3,401 units sold. The Escape led all sales with 28,870 units sold, down 0.4%.

As has been the case all year long, Ford’s car sales were down on nearly all fronts—with the notable exception of the Mustang. The 2015 Ford Mustang was up a whopping 70% with 9,997 models sold, and it is up 53% to-date with 86,769 sales.

Overall, the Ford brand is up 2.5% with a total of 1,685,305 vehicles sold.
