2017 Toyota 86 NYIAS

Most people agree that the Toyota 86, Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ, or whatever else it might be called around the world, is a pretty fun car to drive. In fact, it’s often compared favorably to the beloved Mazda MX-5 Miata and just about the only thing that people ever want to improve on it—as with the Miata—is the engine. 200 horsepower is alright, but these days maybe a tad underpowered; give it 250 horsepower or perhaps 300—somewhere in that range is the sweet spot.

Australia’s StreetFX Motorsports, however, aren’t afraid to dream a little bigger. Forget the Ferrari-powered Toyota 86 that Ryan Tuerck is working on, because the goal for this one is to achieve a whopping 1,000 horsepower, which ought to blow the latter out of the water. We’re not sure what keeps driving people toward tuning the 86, but whatever the reasons, we’re glad they keep giving us these kinds of monster builds to get all silly about.

At first, StreetFX Motorsports had only worked to improve the 86’s existing FA20D engine with a turbocharger and other upgrades. Eventually, they got sick of “only” making 545 horsepower, decided to call that project quits, and threw in a 4.1-liter version of a Nissan GT-R engine instead, complete with a pair of HKS turbos. As you can see in the image above, the GT-R engine is massive compared to the original and it’s been a lot of work just to make the thing fit.

Somewhat appropriately, they’re calling it the WTF86. Read all of the details below on the official Street FX website.
