Rumor: Are We Getting an FR-S Convertible and 4-Door?
Add two doors to this or take the top off of it. Yeah, we’d like either one of those things.
A report from the folks over at Motor Trend states that we are a mere five months away from receiving a Scion FR-S convertible and just two years away from a four-door sedan version.
According to Motor Trend’s source, the FR-S 4-door will expand 20 inches to a length of 187 inches and increase 4 inches in height to 55.1 inches. A designer working on the FR-S 4-door said that the objective is to make it so that the sedan can comfortably seat four adults without losing any of the two-door’s stylish good looks.
It is also believed that Toyota will be preparing two engines for the new FR-S, including an improved version of the Legacy 2.0-liter direct injection turbo Boxer that will generate in excess of 300 horsepower. The other: a hybrid version.
The source tells Motor Trend that Toyota is working on a hybrid powertrain that incorporates the Subaru Boxer engine, as well as in-wheel electric motors. It is assumed that the turbo version of the FR-S 4-door will go for around $35,000 when it launches in mid-2016, with the $50,000-or-so hybrid FR-S expected to follow several months thereafter.
The FT-86 Open Concept could serve as the basis for an FR-S convertible.
As can be expected, the Scion FR-S convertible will be based upon the FT-86 Open Concept that premiered at Geneva last year. Sources say that the modifications from that original concept will be minor, including changes to the suspension, and that the convertible will range between $35,000 and $38,000 when it launches sometime during the haunting season.
We certainly hope that this news is more treat than trick, but we will spare ourselves a letdown by reserving judgment until we see an FR-S convertible in the flesh. Stay tuned for more as news becomes available.
