Ford launched its Fusion midsize sedan a decade ago, and in the 10 years since the brand began rolling out to customers around the world, model sales have more than doubled. Ford moved 142,000 Fusions in that first year, and in 2014, that number climbed to 306,000. Halfway through 2015, there are already 178,263 cars out the door, making another record year a definite possibility.

In 2015, midsize sedans have become almost passé, leaving sales wanting and momentum faltering. Not so for the 2015 Ford Fusion. In fact, it’s only closing the gap between the Accord and the Camry, growing closer and closer to its ultimate goal of being America’s best-selling midsize sedan.

“Fusion is achieving growth in all the right places, especially in California, the largest midsize sedan market in the country, followed by Texas,” said Erich Merkle, Ford sales analyst. “Since its introduction, Fusion–in style-conscious California–has grown at almost six times the rate of the overall segment.”

The Fusion has benefited greatly from its 2013 model year redesign, which has made it more attractive aesthetically and more functionally efficient. Technology and performance have grown, along with the fuel efficiency of both the Fusion and its Hybrid variant.

Adding a bevy of awards—including the 2010 Motor Trend Car of the Year, J.D. Power’s Most Dependable Midsize Car and Best Car for the Money in 2012, and US News & World Report’s Best Hybrid Car for Families in 2015—it’s fair to say that the Fusion has had a decade to remember.

Who’s to say where it will be in 10 years’ time, but it’s a safe bet that it will be somewhere at or near the top of its segment.
