Ford has announced that Kumar Galhotra has been named the new vice president and president of Lincoln, effective September 1. The position of vice president and president of Lincoln is a new dedicated position created by CEO Mark Fields, who is expected to amplify Ford’s efforts to make the Lincoln Motor Company a viable competitor in the luxury auto segment.

Galhotra previously served as Ford’s VP of Engineering, where he was responsible for all global Ford and Lincoln vehicles. He will be succeeded in the position by Jim Holland, who will be named vice president, Vehicle Component and Systems Engineering, also effective September 1. Both men will report to Group VP of Global Product Development Raj Nair.

“These changes underscore our commitment to build on the success of our One Ford plan by accelerating our pace of progress,” Ford President and CEO Mark Fields said. “They also make clear we are serious about Lincoln as a world-class luxury brand and that product excellence and innovation are what will deliver growth and define our entire company going forward.”

As vice president and president of Lincoln (and, while they were at it, why not just name him Lord, Duke, and Chancellor? How about Emperor?), Galhotra will be the most senior leader for Lincoln’s global operations, heading up everything from product development and marketing to sales and service. He will be tasked with ensuring that the continued Lincoln lineup expansion goes off without a hitch and that the brand’s entrance into the Chinese marketplace is successful.

“Now is the right time for the next chapter in accelerating Lincoln as a world-class luxury brand,” Fields said. “Kumar has more than 25 years of global product and business experience, including leading engineering for all of our Lincoln vehicles today. Being our dedicated senior Lincoln leader will serve our clients, employees and dealers extremely well going forward.”

No word on whether the new vice president and president of Lincoln will start going by the official title of Darth Kumar Galhotra.
