Not even a full week has passed since the 2016 GMC Canyon was named Best Midsize Pickup of 2016 by Cars.com, but it seems like GM isn’t content to live off its past success and recently announced a more diverse lineup for the 2017 version of the truck.

To start things off, the 2017 GMC Canyon gets the same 3.6-liter V6 engine and eight-speed automatic transmission that will also be available with the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado. This engine is slightly more powerful than last year’s offering with overall performance now rated at 308 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. In addition, that motor benefits from revised direct injection, variable valve timing, and cylinder deactivation technology.

Also new to the GMC Canyon lineup is an available heated steering wheel, three new exterior color options, and a new IntelliLink radio with 7-inch color touchscreen, which comes standard with Teen Driver technology. Furthermore, the highly anticipated All Terrain X model is available for the 2017 model year.

The GMC Canyon All Terrain X is an extension of the trendy All Terrain package that’s available with the SLE trim. The All Terrain X comes standard with the new 308-horsepower V6 motor and eight-speed automatic gearbox, but the real highlights of this model are its unique off-road suspension, hill descent control technology, transfer case shield, and Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac 255/65R17 all-terrain tires. All of those special features work together to make the Canyon All Terrain X a vehicle capable of mild off-road adventures.

For those consumers who prefer luxury and style over off-road shenanigans, the previously announced Canyon Denali trim will finally become available with the 2017 Canyon. As with all Denali models, a large chrome grille will come standard on the front of the truck, while eye-catching 20-inch ultra-bright alloy wheels will also come equipped on the mid-size pickup. As if that wasn’t enough, the Denali model provides advanced safety features like lane departure warning and forward collision alert. Moreover, passengers will  get to enjoy a Bose seven-speaker sound system.

Overall, sales of the GMC Canyon have increased approximately 18% over last year’s numbers.

“Canyon continues to carve out its own niche as the only premium truck in the midsize segment,” said Vice President of GMC Sales and Marketing Duncan Aldred. “With a broader 2017 Canyon lineup and the redesigned Acadia, GMC is offering more choices for finding the premium truck or SUV that matches customers’ design preferences and capability needs.”

The 2017 GMC Canyon is scheduled to become available at US dealerships later in 2016.
