General Motors Canada Racks Up 267,341 Sales in 2016

General Motors Canada ended 2016 having sold 267,341 vehicles across its Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac brands, a 1.5% year-over-year increase from 2015. Retail sales rose 3.8% at 201,514 units delivered, marking the first time that GM has exceeded retail sales of 200,000 units in Canada since paring its offering down to four brands.

“2016 was a year of solid sales growth and builds a foundation for 2017 as we move into a year with several new vehicle launches including the all-new Chevrolet Bolt and Equinox,” said John Roth, Vice President, Sales, Service, and Marketing, GM Canada.

December sales decreased 2.5% year-over-year with 18,591 units sold. Of that total, retail sales accounted for 11,140 units (down 13.3%) and fleet sales accounted for 6,989 units (up 21.6%). Chevrolet sales were up 4.7% with sales totaling 10,559 units, Buick declined 4.4% at 949 units, Cadillac sales were up 23.1% with 1,347 units delivered, and GMC sales fell 17.9% at 5,274 units.

For the full year, Chevrolet sales were up 1.8% at 151,460 units, led in terms of growth by the Volt (up 137.1%), Spark (up 134.3%), and Suburban (up 60.5%). The Volt was Canada’s top-selling EV for a fourth straight year.

Buick sales increased by 14.8% to 19,053 units, led by the Verano (7,244 units, up 13.9%), Encore (5,533 units, up 12.6%), and Enclave (3,632 units, up 8.1%).

Cadillac sales declined 0.7% at 12,162 units. Sales of the XT5 totaled 2,789 units, and sales of the Escalade and Escalade ESV increased 10.6% and 122.4%, respectively.

GMC sales were down 1.3% at 84,666 units. Sales of the Terrain were up 2.3% at 11,095 units, sales of the Canyon were up 31.2% at 6,083 units, and sales of the Yukon were up 66.1% at 2,842 units.
