General Motors reported that sales of GM vehicles and vehicles produced by its joint ventures in China totaled 295,282 units in May, a new record for the month. Sales were up 16.9% year-over-year thanks to record growth from the Buick, Cadillac, and Baojun brands, as well as its SUVs.

“GM vehicle deliveries in China achieved robust growth in May,” said GM Executive Vice President and GM China President Matt Tsien. “While demand for our SUVs, MPVs, and luxury vehicles remained strong, we also saw impressive demand for passenger car models such as the Buick Excelle GT.”

The Excelle GT was one of Buick’s most popular models as brand sales climbed 61% year-over-year to a total of 100,864 units. Sales of the Excelle family as a whole doubled that from May 2015 at a total of 47,332 units, and Buick SUVs and MPVs were up 24% at a total of 30,954 units.

Cadillac sales were up 30% at a total of 8,568 units, with growth driven by demand for the XTS and ATS-L luxury sedans. In its first full month on the market in China, sales of the XT5 reached 1,449 units.

Baojun sales were up 80% at a total of 43,515 vehicles delivered, led by the Baojun 730 MPV and Bajoun 560 SUV.

Chevrolet sales were down 24% at 38,114 units, though sales of the Malibu XL were up 37% month-to-month. Wuling sales were down 5% at a total of 103,170 units delivered.

Through five months, GM sales in China are up 4.3% at a total of 1,536,913 vehicles sold.
