General Motors reached an unprecedented level of sales success in China for 2017, surpassing a total of 4 million vehicles sold for the first time in company history. GM and its joint ventures delivered 4,040,789 vehicles throughout 2017, up 4.4% from the prior year and making China General Motors’ biggest retail market on the planet for a sixth consecutive year.

The Cadillac, Buick, and Baojun brands contributed to this cause with respective best-ever full-year sales figures. Also key to the new milestone was a 37% uptick in SUV sales from 2016, which was itself helped by the addition of 18 new and refreshed vehicles in the market, including popular SUV and luxury vehicles.

“Consumers’ trust in our brands will help us achieve sustainable and high-quality growth going forward,” said Matt Tsien, GM executive vice president and president of GM China. “We will continue to bring the right products and technology to market to meet increasingly diverse demands for personal mobility.”

Buick closed out 2017 with deliveries totaling 126,804 vehicles, up 20.3% from December 2016. This late surge pushed the brand into the positive for the full year, driving Buick to 0.2% full-year growth with a record 1,182,927 vehicles delivered.

Cadillac ended the year much the same way that it kicked it off: with double-digit sales gains. Cadillac notched its 22nd straight month of double-digit growth in China in December with deliveries totaling 17,217 vehicles, up 28.5% year-over-year. Naturally, Cadillac finished 2017 with double-digit growth, setting a new sales record at 175,489 vehicles delivered—up 50.8% from 2016—and making China Cadillac’s leading global sales market for the first time ever.

Baojun also finished its record 2017 with a strong December, delivering 36.7% growth with 137,956 vehicles. Full-year sales were up 44.8% at 996,629 vehicles, driven by the introduction of automatic transmissions for its entire lineup and the popularity of the Baojun 510 SUV and Baojun 310 Wagon.

Chevrolet also put forth big growth in December and 2017 as a whole: the bowtie brand’s December sales rose 6.6% at 78,661 vehicles, bringing full-year sales to 547,561 vehicles and full-year growth to 4.2%.

Wuling sales totaled 1,138,183 vehicles in 2017, down 16.3% from 2016.
