This year has most definitely been the year of the recall, and while no automaker will emerge unscathed, General Motors perhaps took the hardest beating. Thanks to sound leadership from newly appointed CEO, Mary Barra, the company has managed to pull through, even with a renewed sense of dignity.

A remaining issue for The General, however, is the surprising amount of apathetic drivers who have yet to bring in their recalled vehicles for repair work. In fact, GM is reporting that it’s only fixed 1.27 million of the 2.2 million cars related to the ignition switch recall from last winter, simply because drivers aren’t coming in. In an effort to get drivers into the dealerships, General Motors is using gift cards as an incentive.

According to Automotive News, The General started to mail letters to owners last week, once again encouraging them to address the recall issue, at no cost to them. The current incentive to any driver who takes care of the issue by December 1st is a $25 gift card to Amazon, AMC, Applebee’s, Bass Pro Shops, Red Robin, Starbucks, or Wal-Mart.

Yep, you tell a driver that his car might kill him and there’s a free fix, and he’ll keep driving it until he dies. But you tell a driver that his car might kill him, but hey, here’s four free coffees if you get it fixed, and he’ll be first in line.

That’s where we are, America. That’s where we are.
